The Life & Times of a Family

The Bellamys and their servants experienced so many wonderful, and not so wonderful, moments between 1903 and 1930. Here are some of my favorite Upstairs Downstairs characters and events.

Richard & Lady Marjorie

Richard Bellamy and his wife, Lady Marjorie. He is a Conservative member of Parliment although he has no wealth of his own. The real money comes from Lady Marjorie, whose father is the powerful and formidable Earl of Southwold. They are happily married, although Lady M did stray one time...

Lady Marjorie carried on a very brief affair with Captain Charles Hammond, a friend of her son James. They shared a love of opera and poetry – Their mutual attraction was evident. However, Lady M came to her senses and chose duty and devotion to her family rather than risk scandal. Charles reported back to India and was soon killed in action.

The Bellamys have two children: son James and daughter Elizabeth. Their behavior at times gave their parents much grief.

James & SarahJames Bellamy, a captain in the Life Guards, became attracted to Sarah, an under-houseparlourmaid. Sarah was lively, ambitious, full of dreams. She left the Bellamys' employ and soonafter became a star in the music hall. Their affair resulted in Sarah's pregnancy...Sarah was packed off to Southwold while James was sent to India. The baby was stillborn.

ElizabethElizabeth Bellamy was a handful, at least to her mother. She had ideas of her own, often at odds with her parents. Inclined to radical politics and asserting her independence, Elizabeth shocked her parents by running away from a debutant ball where she was to presented at court. Here Rose, the head housemaid and Elizabeth's confidante, tries to talk sense into "Miss Lizzie" after the girl finally comes home.
