"Bird Seed" Snack Mix

Unusual name for a snack. I remember this from my Girl Scout camp days. Our leader would bring a big canister of the stuff; we'd load up the Baggies before hitting the trail. What? No trail mix? This was late 1960's into early 1970's — there was no such thing as trail mix.

The original called for Trix or Froot Loops, but I substituted Fruity Cheerios for the whole grain and low sugars. In place of salted peanuts I used plain unsalted as there is ample sodium from the cereal and pretzels.

Keeps well if tightly covered in airtight container. Fill individual ZipLoc bags for a quick on-the-road or in-the-air snack.
Dear Teachers, this makes a nice tasty and nutritious snack for your students, and not just for the kindergarten-first grade crowd. I've served this to teenagers and it was very well received. And No leftovers!
