Readability Scales

[Note: This page is very much still under construction, but the script works fine. I still have to put the form attributes in a table for ease in navigation then make a page explaining the readability scales.]

I've always wondered how my stories measured on a readability scale. Being primarily on WebTV means I don't always have access to the readability tools available on MS Word. So I found this neat script that takes away much guesswork. I've used such scales e.g., Fry and Flesch, for selecting supplementary material for my students, but never thought of analyzing my personal writings.
This analyzer takes a snippet of my writing (or yours!) then calculates the number of sentences, words, syllables per word, and characters. Using these numbers, it then calculates the Flesch Reading Ease, Fog Scale Level, and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, which are three of the most common readability measurements. Simply supply a sample of your writing and then click "Analyze."

Text Sample:

Number of Sentences:

Words Per Sentence:

Characters Per Word:

Flesch Reading Ease:
?

Fog Scale Level:
?

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level:
?

More to come what all this means. Please feel free to Email Me if you have any questions.
