"Huh ? Who me ?" "I have two questions for you." " Oh ! Ok what are they ?" "Who's your favorite Pop artist and what's your favorite Pop song ?" "Oh ok . lemme see, ahhh _____ is my favorite Pop" artist and ______ is my favorite Pop song. Ahhh, why?" "Well, I'm thinking I could make a pretty good arguement against either of those being Pop !" "Ohhh reeeeeaaally..." "Yep ! Doesn't _____ lean a little more to the rock ( or country, or folk, or jazz,or whatever ) ? and doesn't your favorite song sound more like a rock ( or country, or jazz, or whatever ) song, and oh by the way, wasn't that really a theme song from a movie ?" "Ummm, well ahhh, gee, I guess so, what's the point ?" The point is, Pop is very difficult to define - hard to label and deciding what's what and who's who is a challange in this genre of music. Chances are by the end of that imaginary conversation, you'd be rolling your eyes around in your head and saying "Okokokok WHAT_ev_ahhh" Right this second I can think of only two people that have Pop songs and can be considered Pop artists, a majority of the time, and they are Elton John and Phil Collins. Those two don't seem to stray too far into other areas and I am sure there are arguements against that too ! In fact there is a messageboard installed at the bottom of the page ( please see info below before posting ) so viewers can post their ideas on the subject and perhaps post MIDI files they would call Pop songs. I think it will be fun to see what shows up! There is also a button at the bottom to take you to my list of links to Pop MIDI file pages, with the clarification that most of those pages are listed as Pop/Rock or Pop/Easy Listening Pop/Whatever, because NO ONE seems to have a clear idea of where this genre starts and stops! One thing remains true even though there are the complications . Whatever you may wish to call it, the songs and artists that often fall within the catagory have wide appeal. Their music tends to be cross-generational and is appreciated by millions. Please check out the samples above, the messageboard and the links attached to the next page and see what's out there.
